Optimisation (2).gif

Superstructure is a design to fabrication consultancy with a focus on computational design, digital fabrication, and design for manufacturing and assembly (DfMA).

We bridge the gap between challenging design concepts and their physical realisations, expanding the possibilities beyond traditional techniques by implementing integrated workflows that address design intent, aesthetics, materiality, technical performance, and construction efficiency.

At our Microfactory with in-house fabrication facilities, we continually explore new methods and ways to design, project-manage, and produce to meet the growing needs of the built environment.

Computational Design

Computational design allows for a comprehensive view of the entire built process – extending to the fabrication, shipping, and installation instructions, while considering the manpower allocation necessary, as well as space and material constraints.

Optimisation and Nesting

Superstructure is committed to advocating more sustainable fabrication methods and materials through practices such as optimising production to maximise the use of raw material and upcycling and repurposing offcuts or waste material whenever possible.

Using intelligent nesting software, we can maximize material usage, which reduces scrap and waste, achieving efficiency and environmentally-conscious practices in production.

Design

Rationalisation

Computational design allows us to have a holistic view of the entire built process, ranging from fabrication, shipping and installation instructions, taking into account necessary manpower allocations, space and material constraints to ensure a smooth project flow, minimising costs and time on site.

Computationally generated, each panel is then digitally fabricated true to the 3D model specifications.

Digital Fabrication

Digital fabrication workflows allow for complex geometries to be fabricated with precision while downsizing manpower needs.

The labour pool is then able to focus and specialise in computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) workflows, leveraging on machinery and automation to do most of the production work.

Our services include:

  • Design rationalisation, development, and detailing

  • Preparing fabrication-ready drawings and models

  • One-off and small-batch manufacturing

  • CADCAM construction

Prototype Development

With an array of digital fabrication tools, file-to-factory workflow, and formal training in design and fabrication, we are capable of iterating a design idea promptly, going from sketch to 3D model to final form fabrication while preserving the design intent.

Our services include:

  • Development of prototypes and 1:1 mock-ups

  • Model making

  • Mould making

Project Management

With an overview of the design to fabrication process, Superstructure's role as an intermediary between designers and builders helps bring synergy to a project.

Designs can be realised whilst maintaining efficiency in production and installation.

Our services include:

  • Development of installation instructions

  • Assembly supervision

Innovation, experimentation, and research is at the core of what we do.

In hopes that the built environment can perform more productively and adopt greener practices, we endeavour to continuously engage in R&D, especially in the aspects of production methods and material exploration.

We invite industry partners, designers, artists, and makers alike to embark on purposeful collaborations.
