-XTRA Herman Miller Shop-in-Shop
Learning from the design processes of Herman Miller work chairs, which combine formal, structural, and material innovation based on the research of ergonomics to create a surface that molds comfortably to the human body, we developed a “skin” for the Herman Miller shop-in-shop.
This “skin” molded to the XTRA showroom, to which was its host, resulted in the Herman Miller shop-in-shop expressed as a porous envelope forming an independent entity, allowing for visual links while maintaining the identities of both Herman Miller and XTRA brands.
Our Approach
Just as the Herman Miller work chairs have been designed to adapt to our postures and movements, the “skin” was molded to adapt to existing structures and customer movement patterns.
The continuous surfaces forming the façade, walls, ceiling, and entrances invite customers into the store, guiding them through the shopping experience.
Fabricwood prototype simulation
A kit-of-parts, the complex double-layered woven envelope was "stitched" together using simple three-legged plywood component panels designed with interlocking lap-joints.
The majority of the panels were standardised to three varying sizes to achieve greater efficiency for fabrication and assembly. Customised panels were limited to the weaving as well as doubly-curved surfaces. Approximately 4,000 wooden pieces made up the rigid structure.
Compared with conventional design and construction techniques, the component-based design process demands greater continuity and simultaneous planning across all stages of the project.
From designing the components and its joints, shaping of the envelope, fabrication of the panels, to assembly on-site, the entire process was controlled parametrically for increased accuracy and precision.
The parametric surface modulates light and views into a flexible, open space. The plywood material forms a warm and casual ambiance while its structure and assemblages express the dynamic process that combines technology with design.
